Sagrada Familia

The term Sagrada Familia means Holy Family and refers to a famous Roman Catholic church which was designed by the architect Antoni Gaudi. Building work commenced in 1882 and continued after his death in 1926 under the direction of Domenech Sugranyes. The work was interrupted by the Spanish Civil War in 1935, but is expected to be finally completed around the year 2026 the 100th anniversary of Gaudis death.

Eixample

This is a district of Barcelona which was constructed in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The Eixample is characterised by long, straight streets, in a grid-pattern crossed by wide avenues. This was a visionary, pioneering design by the architect Ildefons Cerda.

Casas Modernistas

Situated at the main thoroughfare of the city in Passeig de Gracia are some quite modern buildings.
As you walk along the Passeig de Gracia from Plaza Catalunya until you come to the next set of cross-roads, you will see some houses of modernism on the left-hand side.
At the far end of Gracia on the right-hand side you will come to the famous Casa Mila ( Pedrera ) which belongs to the distinctive style of Antonio Gaudi.

The Cathedral

In the centre of the Barri Gotic ( Gothic district ) in the heart of Barcelona, is the citys Gothic cathedral, known locally as La Seu. The official name is Cathedral de la Santa Creu i Santa Eulalia, after Barcelonas patron saint, Eulalia.

Montjuc

This can best be translated as either The Hill of the Jews or possibly The Hill of Jupiter. It is 173 meters high.
The Montjuic was selected for several of the events relating to the 1992 Summer Olympic Games, which were centred around the Olympic Stadium.
At the top of the hill there is a Museum dedicated to the (life of the) Catalan artist Joan Mir, and a castle dating from 1751. Also a Spanish village which shows various kinds of Spanish architecture and a park with a museum.

La Rambla

This is a busy thouroughfare in central Barcelona. It is popular with both tourists and locals alike. La Rambla is a 1.2 km long tree-lined pedestrian mall in the Barri Gottic district , and connects the Plaza de Catalunya in the centre with the Christopher Columbus monument at Port Vell. The name La Rambla in both Spanish and Catalan means an intermittent flow of water and is derived from the Arabic Ramla meaning a sandy river-bed.

The Plaza Catalunya

This is a large Plaza, surrounded by famous old buildings, and is Barcelonas busiest square. It is located between the old city ( Ciutat Vella ) and the 19th century Eixample district.
